Ludhiana was founded in 1480 by the Lodhi dynasty from Delhi. It subsequently passed through many hands, including the Rajputs and the Mughals. Ludhiana was the centre of a fierce contest during the first Sikh war with the British from the period 1845 to 1846. The city grew as an industrial hub after India gained independence in 1947.
Ludhiana, known as the Manchester of India, is Punjab's most populous metropolis.
