Konkan ‘Konquest’
The Konkan region of Maharashtra is ideal for weekend getaways. The beaches, forts, hill stations and temples will truly conquer your soul. Take your pick! - Dynan Gomes

GANPATIPULE
One of the most spectacular beaches along the Konkan Coast, Ganpatipule is home to temple of the Swayambhu Ganesh (self-originated). He is considered the Paschim Dwardevta (western sentinel). Apart from its pristine beach and clear waters, Ganpatipule is rich in mangroves and coconut palms. When you visit, don’t miss the snorkeling and scuba diving that are available here.

DERVAN VILLAGE
Did you ever want to stand shoulder to shoulder with Shivaji and Afzal khan? Then it is time you visited Dervan village. Highlights of stories from Shivaji’s life are portrayed in impressive life-size sculptures on the walls of the village.

MALVAN
Malvan is known for its Chinese clay pottery and mouth-watering 'Malvani cuisine,' which is the piece de resistance in traditional Konkan food. You could visit the Sindhudurg and Padmagad forts and then try your hand at snorkeling and scuba diving at Vengurla. The sunset at Malvan is spectacular; evenings are busy with auctions of fresh fish. If your Malvan memento is likely to be fish then you might be wise to carry an ice box, for fish as you know has a way of really making its presence felt!

TARKARLI
Don’t miss the clear blue waters as you relax at the Tarkarli beach tents and take your pick from the appetising Konkani cuisine. The water skiing, snorkeling and scuba diving experience at Tarkarli can rival any other in the Indian sub-continent.

SAWANTWADI
The city of Sawantwadi is built around a lake called ‘Moti Talav’ (Pearl Lake). The 15th Century Sawantwadi Palace is well worth a visit. Feminists will be happy to note that the galleries in the upper part of the palace were reserved for ladies. You could easily get lost in the seven-acre Sawantwadi Palace. Be sure to pick up the delicately crafted wooden toys, which are synonymous with Sawantwadi craftsmen.

SHIRODA BEACH
With its sparking blue waters and silver sands, Shiroda is a memorable experience. Budding authors might want to note that Shiroda Beach is said to be the inspiration for the eminent novelist V. S. Khandekar. You could also relive the Salt Satyagraha that took place here under the inspiration of the Mahatma in 1930.

AMBOLI
This hill station is surrounded by dense forests and the Arabian Sea. There are beautiful cascading waterfalls during the monsoons. The Karvi tree that flowers once in seven years is found here. Your trip to Amboli is incomplete without a visit to the Hiranyakeshi, which is over 200 years old and was carved out of a single rock. If a temple in the middle of a forest intimidates you, then visit during the festival of Mahashivratri and you will have more than 15,000 people for company. Beside the temple is a 300-meter long cave, which has seven fresh water springs. The Ganges is said to have originated from these springs.
