Amritsar
- The Golden Temple is Amritsar's Taj Mahal. Everybody pays a visit there. For
non-Sikhs, the real draw
is however, the temple's halwa, a porridge soaked in
clarified butter and nuts. Other temptations of Amristar are the spicy Amritsari
macchi (fish), papad (a snack), naan (a stuffed bread) and woollens. Yes, this
is where most of India's blankets come from.
Amritsar is the city of the Sikhs, the big moustached and turbaned people of
northern India. A boisterous race, they were the first to take to
industrialization and moved from their farms to businesses of transport and
motor accessories. Amritsar reflects the high spirits of its people-their love
of food, music and an animal zest for life. Even today, the family is the
epicenter of their lives, with generations sitting down together for the evening
meal.
